Vulnerability

If I could tell you all my fears and get it off my chest,
If I could tell you what I hate and what I love the best,
If I could fully clear the air and really speak my mind,
With total, open honesty, the truest you could find
If I could only trust and know that all was safe to say,
If I could bear my deepest truth with nothing in the way,
If I could tell you everything with nothing left unsaid,
And tell you what is actually both in my heart and head
Then we could get as close as ever human beings could be
Wed reach a depth of knowing that would surely set us free
Of all the pain and doubt and hurt that keeps our worlds apart
And keeps us both defensively protecting self and heart
Intimacy is a need that human beings all crave
But the risk is so extreme, and few are quite that brave
Wed rather suffer endlessly this empty, hungry need
Than suffer vulnerability, attempting this to feed
